Now that my Fulbright Fellowship has ended, I am developing a sustainable boutique resort in southern Bangladesh that provides relaxing, beautiful, luxurious accommodation for guests while maintaining a commitment to social and environmental sustainability. Located in a village just 70 km from the famous Sundarban mangrove forest, Panigram will be a modern interpretation of vernacular Bangladeshi mud and bamboo architecture.
Features of the resort will include: produce organically grown on site, alternative energy, an environmental education program in a nearby school, support of women’s cottage industries and local artisans, and a training program for local contractors on modern mud and bamboo construction techniques.
It is my hope that Panigram will be the first of many boutique resorts focused on destination stewardship.
